Introduction

What is grief and loss?

Grief is a normal response to loss. Everyone experiences grief and loss at some point. Grief is personal and is not defined by other peoples’ expectations on what to grieve or not to grieve.

Loss can include, for example:

  • The death of a loved one or pet.

  • Parents’ divorce.

  • Breaking up with your partner.

  • Moving schools and losing your friendship group.

Grief is about our emotions, but it can also affect our bodies, our thoughts, and what we do. You might have heard of things like the ‘stages of grief’. We know there are no stages, or ways people should approach grief and loss.

In this program, we will not suggest you ‘move on’, or other things you might have heard that can feel unhelpful.

We know that everyone has a different experience of loss and came to this program on their own unique path.
