Module 4

Jamie’s experiment

Watch to hear Jamie talking about an experiment:

I thought people just don’t want to hear about it.
— Jamie

Here is an example of an experiment Jamie did to test out a thought:

1) My thought (Be as specific as possible, and rate how strong your thoughts and feelings are from 0 to 10):
If I say something about my feelings my close friend will change the topic (9/10). I will feel stressed after and not sleep (8/10). My friend will not want to catch up again (9/10).
2) Experiment: Think of an experiment to test out the thought.
Talk to a close friend about how I am feeling.
3) Results:
My close friend did not change the topic and listened to me. I was able to sleep. We are meeting again next week. I felt less stressed after talking to my friend.
4) What I've learned:
My thought was not correct that my close friend will not want to see me again if I talk about how I am feeling.
5) My new thought (rate how strong your new thoughts and feelings are from 0 to 10):
My close friend will listen if I talk about my feelings (9/10). I felt less stressed after talking (9/10).

You can see how Taylor, Riley and Jamie were able to change their thinking.

It’s important after doing an experiment to consider - how can I build on this?  Jamie thought: I can try the experiment with another close friend.
